Have you ever seen a baby that will fit in the palm of your hand?  It's an amazing sight.  One I first experienced while shooting our story in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Brenner Children's Hospital.  All I can say is WOW!  Such small babies, such big battles ahead of them.  I've said it before and I will say it again, perhaps the most fun part of doing a story like this is walking away feeling lucky.  Feeling good about what I'm sharing with all of you.

I was presented this idea by a loyal viewer after we did a story on the " Bubble Boy" in Yadkin County.  A few mothers who've been down the same road as Jackson and his family wanted someone to share a glimpse of the nursery and the professionals that saved their children's life.  While in no way could we capture all the things going on in that part of the hospital, all of the people, all of the technology, all the amazing things, what we wanted to do with the story was give people a feeling of pride knowing they had something so advanced right here in our backyard.  I hope that's what you saw.

As you probably saw, Jackson is a strong little guy, but he still has some battles to fight. Say a prayer for his family and all the others that are sitting by those tiny beds everyday watching, waiting and hoping for these small miracles to pull through!  Say a prayer for those who work so hard to save them.

Thank you to those opened my eyes and alerted me to this story, thank you to those who watched it ! As always if you have any story ideas, let me know!  I will try my best to get to them!

I was blessed enough to have had 4 healthy pregnancies (although 2 tried to come premature, the drs. were able to stop them). And then my "baby" daughter went into labor pre-term, but not so much, the dr. said, that there would be any problem. So, I go in with her during her C-section (I'm a Registered Nurse), and as soon as the baby was born, I "knew" something just wasn't right, although they acted as if all was fine. They asked me to go with them to the nursery, while they weighed her and cleaned her up. As I stood outside the nursery, I watched through the window as they started their work, when suddenly, several nurses came running, and I heard the overhead page code for a respiratory arrest in the NICU. I immediately started crying, knowing that it was my little granddaughter they were calling it for (as the Physician asst. told me, I knew too much being a nurse). She was only born approx. 4-6wks. early, but because of the c-section, the fluid hadn't been "squeezed" out of her lungs. So she had to be LIFE FLIGHTed to UNC Chapel Hill, and stayed for about 2wks. on CPAP. & IV feedings. Some of the babies there only weighed 1 pound, yes, that's what I said ONE LB. It is TRUllY miraculous the technology and knowledge that is now available, but as you said, babies that small have so many other problems to battle. My little "angel" is thriving and will always hold a special place in my heart, because of all she struggled through. So yes, I include the babies, parents, drs., and nurses in my prayers for the wonderful work that they do. Sometimes, the outcome is no

(sorry, got cut off) Sometimes, the outcome is not a happy one, but you know that they did EVERYTHING possible to help them, that's for sure!

I had to write something...my daughter was at Brenners from March 21st through March 26th of this year! Unfortunently what my child had could not be fixed by the doctors at Brenners and she passed away at 11:55pm on March 26th! The doctors and the nursing staff there are absolutely amazing! They gave her the care she needed even though they knew that we had elected to have the respirator removed! They also took care of me and my family..giving us time with her before she passed on and letting us hold her until she did and taking pictures of her! They are an amazing group and I wish Jackson and his family all the luck in the world! I personally have got to talk to Jacksons mother because my daughter was in the same room as my daughter! Good Luck and thank you to everyone at Brenners!!!

My heart and prayers go out to you, KenziesMommy, I couldn't even imagine what you have gone through except through my experience as a nurse. I'm glad that they gave and did all that you needed, because there is no more caring of a group than the NICU (unless you count Hospice, too). God Bless you and yours, and thank you for telling of your experience!

My husband and I know first hand about EVERYTHING in the NICU and Brenner's Childrens Hospital, because our son was born 4 weeks early and I know he wasn't as sick or tiny like all the other babies we had seen there but knowing that your child is in the NICU is just scary enough in its self! We seen ALOT while Deven (our son) was in the NICU for a week at Forsyth then another week at Brenner's...Its scary to walk into the NICU and hear all of the alerts going off and not knowing if its your baby making the alerts go off or if its the baby beside your child thats going down hill! The NICU is a VERY SCARY place but thanks to the March of Dimes and everybody in the NICU working so hard to save each and every little tiny miracle! My husband and I just walked 3 miles a few weeks ago for the March of Dimes for our son who is now almost 8 months old and VERY HEALTHY! But when our son was born I didn't get that chance to hold him right after he was born cause they rushed him right to the NICU and it wasn't until a few hours later that I got to go see him and when I did he was tiny (4lb 7.6 oz) and had tubes coming out of him from EVERYWHERE! But we know what Jackson's parents are going through...we may not know EXACTLY cause our son was born as early but we know alot of what they are feeling and if they see this message they are more then welcome to e*mail us for some advice or just a comfort word...and our prayers and thoughts are with Jackson and his family and all of the other babies in the NICU not only at Brenner's but at Forysth Hospital to!

Deven's Story...Our journey with the NICU & a Premmie Baby

Deven was born 4 weeks early on September 17, 2006 weighing 4 lb 7.6 oz and 18 1/4 in. long and had to spend 2 weeks in the NICU 1 week at Forsyth Hospital and 1 week at Brenner's Children Hospital. While he was at Forsyth he was put on a CPAP and was having a little hard time keeping his body temp. up but he got the hang of that then he was having problems eatting and keeping his food down so they thought that his intestins were twisted and they told us he would need to have surgery so they moved him to Brenner's Children Hospital and while he was there he had "Jondis" real bad and had to be under the lights ALOT! They ran test after test on him and come to find out he was fine he was just born early and was having a hard time passing the "plug" but now he is doing a WONDERFUL job on gaining weight he is almost 8 months old and doing GREAT! His father and I and the rest of our friends and family couldn't be any more proud of him since he had a hard start at life and went through so much at such a young age!

This was a great story! It is amazing how these babies can be so little and survive. My niece had her baby 10 weeks early in January. She was so small and had to stay in the hospital for quite a while, but she is doing great. My brother and his wife lost a baby that was 3 months early back 15 years ago. They couldn't do anything to help the baby. They had 1 hour with the baby before he died. I am so glad they are finding new ways every day to help these precious little ones!

I am Jackson's Papaw. We love him very much and are proud of him and his fighting spirit. He has has many medical problems since he was born including NEC (necrotizing Ennercolitis). His colon became infected with NEC and he lost 1/3 of his colon from surgery. His kidneys stopped working for a week after surgery and he gained over three pounds of fluid weight. He has yet to shed all of this weight and it continues to cause him multiple problems.
"Little Jack" need a miracle from God. Please pray for him and as God to send this miracle. We believe in Jesus Christ and we believe that He can and does perform miracles every day.
Please remember the nurses and doctors who are working with the preemies at Brenner and Forsyth Medical Center as they make life changing decisions every day for our sick babies.

My son was born in 1997 at Forsyth Memorial and weighed just 2 lbs 15 ozs and 13 1/2 " long. He was born 10 weeks early and thank GOD he was healthy. His apgar score was 9 and 9, he screamed when he entered this world and has been screaming every since (lol). We saw so many babies come through those doors the 21 days he was there, some unfortunately passed away and some "Graduated"-(NICU moms know what I mean) and went home. I think we take too many things for granted, we take life too fast. My son and his little sister (born in 2000 at 5 lbs 4 ozs and 21" long) are growing up so fast, it's hard to believe he came home 21 days after his birth weighing just 3 lbs and 9 ozs & 15" long. Now at 10 years old he is only 49 lbs but healthy and active. These babies have the best care in the world in the NICU's at these hospitals and I just want to thank them for all the good they do.

THANK YOU!!!!

My son was born at 31 weeks and weighed 3.8 lbs. He was in the NICU at Baptist for 5 months and a week. He had Chronic Kidney Disease and alot of other complications. The doctors and nurses were great to him and me even though there was not alot of babies with this problem they did their best. My son had more moms than I ever thought he would have and they loved him like their own and I'm thankful that there are so many nurses that have such big hearts to take on this kind of work. But my baby died on March 25, 2007 to a never ending battle that he would have lived with for the rest of his life. But I am so thankful for the nurses and doctors they did their very best and I thank God that I got 5 GREAT months to be with my baby.

For anyone who has kept up with "Little Jack", Jackson went to be with the Lord today at 4:40pm. I cannot imagine the grief his family is going through, as my heart is aching and breaking right now. But, I have to remember that he is in heaven now, and though we will miss him, he "touched" so many lives with his "tiny" soul, the Lord's will has been done.
