Happy New Year Everyone!

Except for the sound of three firecrackers at midnight, New Years passed without much fanfare.  Sleep took over somewhere during the news making the last news story of 2007, at least for me, the story about the lady getting tossed off the bus for reading the Bible out loud to her children.

Not only was this not news last night, but FOX felt compelled to re-run the article this morning.  The only logical reason FOX would create news out of such a non-event might be because they’re trying to shake off the byproduct of reporting the truth (liberalism), but, to me, creating Christian conservative news is a bit obvious and debasing.

Between Dart and the T, does anyone have a clue how many people are asked to get off trains or busses every year for creating disturbances? Many of those people are preaching “their” own form of gospel, but no Christian subculture of the ACLU jumped in to defend those peoples’ rights.  I have little doubt the woman was treated any differently than if she had been reading a newspaper or reciting “Mother Goose” rhymes at the same voice level as she was reading the Bible.

If she was speaking as loudly on the bus as she was in the newscast, she certainly would have prevented other passengers from reading quietly to themselves. She would have also more than likely silenced any conversations between other passengers and perhaps even been a distraction to the bus driver.  In my opinion the T went above and beyond their obligation by delivering the woman to church.

Being familiar with these types of Christians, my guess is this lady was not just reading the Bible to her children; she was in essence preaching to everyone else on the bus. She was probably quite proud of herself up until the time she was asked to stop.  The only advice I could give to her would be to either keep her voice down to an unobtrusive tone or restrict her preaching to where and when preaching is appropriate.

I hope ya’ll have a great day!

It is freedom of religion, not freedom from religion,, She has every right to read her Bible where ever she likes,, If I have to listen to every one's not always so nice cell phone conversations,, And lump it then like-ways with some good Christian Words from Our Bible,,,,

There are some who want to make a scene, believing they're doing some grandiose good 'for God'. Most likely, the best thing she could have done was speak a little softer and be thoughtful of the rules. Everyone should follow the rules, which were posted.
I wasn't there so don't know how loud, or un-loud, she was, but the entire incident seemed a little foolish.

Happy New year bugs!!!
... fireworks, gunshots... those are the people who needed to be 'thrown off the bus', so to speak!

There is a time and place for everything and I don't think this was a proper place or time to be reading the Bible to kids.

It seems like someone was trying for attention and got it by not obeying the rules.

The public has a right to the free exercise thereof (religion) that is actually in the constitution, as opposed to so many other "rights" people seem to claim. None of us posting here knows how loud she was. Buses aren't quiet to begin with, for sure. But several posters seem to be assuming a lot of things, such as the woman's intentions to begin with. Just going with the facts as reported, I find no reason to throw her off the bus. They said they had signs posted against playing radios and loud behavior. Reading in and of itself is not necessarily "loud behavior." I am entirely skeptical when it comes to this sort of thing. Since everyone else is assuming, I'll assume the text of the report meant what it said, that the woman was reading to her children. I'm also assuming that they were seated next to her, and not at the other end of the bus. I don't find any evidence of "Loud behavior" and there was no mention of a radio being played by the woman. I bet the bus people (DART or whoever) back down, sooner or later.

Many people use the time during their commute to catch up on email, make phone calls, read or simply prepare mentally for the day. While this lady certainly is free to read to her children, I have an idea that she was choosing to select Biblical text with the idea of preaching at people. Like I said before your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose.

Sorry-Fox is triple posting my writing again. Please delete. Argh. BTW, have you ever read Twain's "Letters to the Earth" where he discussed the differences between the Professing Christian and the Professional Christian? Good stuff.

I find both the driver and the lady at fault. First the lady should have stopped when told to do so. The bible says to respect authority, and in this instance the driver was the authority and she should have stopped, and showed her children as a christian role model, how to respect authority. Then she could have raised her concern to the drivers superiors. Now if the driver just said stop reading, and didnt ask her to please lower her voice, or read silently as to not offend the other passengers, then that was wrong, and the "T" should reprimand the drivers as being unproffessional. But all I am going off of is the written story.

"between the Professing Christian and the Professional Christian"
Nope, sure haven't, Blu, but I know just what he's referring too... lot of going on and always has been. I'll have to read it, thanx. :]

Another opportunity for American history to be forever changed because a woman refused to give up her seat on a bus.

And just like the passengers did to this lady, you should complain about the loud cell-phone talkers!

I have personally counseled the woman on the bus, before and after the incident on the bus. I know that she is an honest woman that would not try to blast her beliefs on others by reading to loud. She was merely putting her "FAITH --Find Assurance In Trusting Him" (from the book "Cross Words" by Nick Furey)in action by using her constitutional right to read her Bible to her children, which I might add that many other parents should be doing in our country. It is a sad day when our God blessed country forgets where we got our greatness from -- God, and the best place to find out more about Him....the Bible. I wish more people would stand up for their faith like this woman!

I have been on buses where people were speaking loudly using profanity, telling profane jokes, cussing others out, etc. within ear shot of the bus driver and nothing was done about it. Whether you are a Christian or not, the plane truth of the matter is that a double standard exist where it shouldn't. It wasn't so long ago that when people complained about the double standard imposed on ethnic minorities, they too were told, "Why do you keep b#%*hing...", "Seriously?", "I can't speak to someone who refuses to think rationally. That is completely insane.","Why don't you call them devil worshipers[people against racial equality] while you are at it.","You are a lunatic.","methane for brains", "nutjobs". And, to top if off, "There's a new movement going on where some [ethnic minorities] REALLY want to believe they are being persecuted. It's weird to me. She got kicked off because she was loud. [Not because of her color] Get over it!"

once again, the woman on the bus was not too loud, and the bus driver NEVER asked her to quiet down!

Hi Guys! I haven’t been around a computer lately; hopefully things will get back to normal after today.

I hope everyone had a great New Year!

Thanks I_S, I hope you had a great New Year!

LOL@TT, I’ve been accused of preaching during inappropriate times, but I try to stay off busses and street corners.

Chard, I’m pretty sure they weren’t firecrackers (didn't want to sound too dramatic), but in light of previous years, 3 was almost nothing at all.

Hi Aunt Bee, that’s my whole point. There is a proper time, place, and tone for reading ANYTHING out loud. Apparently this lady didn’t have a clue about any of the three.

Scott-R, I’m going by the way I perceived the facts as I saw them reported on the news. First of all, as I stated earlier, if the lady was reading as loudly (not whispering as she should have been) as she was reading during the interview, she was reading too loud.

Second of all I have to take the words of both the T official and the lady into account. Her appearance and attire indicate she’s a fundamentalist. That fact alone takes away from her credibility. On the other hand, the T official stated the obvious. If the lady hadn’t been reading too loudly, the bus driver wouldn’t have asked her stop reading or to lower her voice.

(cont.) of course

People are great! I love animals. Humor is very important as are tolerance and compassion. The “Golden Rule’ is good and “There but for the grace of God go I,” is true. My faith defines who I am as a person. I always learn a lot more when I’m listening than when I’m talking. Sometimes my humor and fingers run ahead of my brain so if I ever personally offend anyone, please smack me upside the head and tell me so. One of my all time favorite quotes is from the television show “Frasier”. “Civilization's not going to progress one iota unless someone points out when peoples' manners are remiss.” Daphne Moon. If I had to choose a movie which most paralleled my life, I’d be torn between Prince’s “Purple Rain” and “Forest Gump”. "Feather" from "Forest Gump" and "Purple Rain" are the theme songs posted on my "about me" page at my website. My life has been a wild and adventurous ride filled with laughter, pain, glamour, heartache, and joy. From one minute to the next, life never seems to be the same as the day before. I’m the epitome of narcissism and try to remain humble. Feel free to comment at any time, just, in the words of a popular blogger, “keep it real”. I’m here to have fun; please do the same.
