Here is my opinion and thoughts on the Power and Light District.
Some may say the complaints by citizens and taxpayers which so happen to be if records show, are about 95% Black when regarding the dresscode and being turned away. This was a discussion this past Tuesday in my Cultural Diversity class which sparked my interest to Blog this since two of my other students are bloggers as well.

Now lets put the shoe on the other foot. Lets just say the Power and Light District's dress code was as follows.

NO:
  • Flip Flops
  • Abercrombie shirts
  • Medium Shirts on men 5'10 or taller and must come below the belt-line
  • Cargo Shorts
  • Shredded jeans

Who "Demographically" is that directed at? Some may say White people if their glasses are on correctly. It affects Asians and Whites in my opinion. Now if that was enforced, who would populate the Power and Light Dist now?

Now there are dress codes in every town and every city and for those of you such as mpvan, vision of course, cherokee316, bebo, that think that the African American community is blowing hot air about this issue, none of the dress code is directed towards anything but the African American community.

NO:
  • Sweats or Sports Jerseys
  • MC Colors
  • Sleeveless or baggy shirts
  • No White T's (Understandable)

There is one thing to have a dress code but come on, Crip and Blood gangs dont exist anymore. Red isnt gang attire, Blue isnt gang attire, White isnt gang attire, Jersey's arent gang attire unless you want to consider the thousands of NCAA fans that came to see the tournaments gangmembers, baggy pants isnt trouble maker clothing, you can barely buy clothes for males that arent somewhat baggy, its open to everyone to wear, you dont see the gangs of kids covered in all one color symbolizing a gang, just because a person has a long shirt on doesnt make him a drug dealer, there is enough police enforcement and security there that when me and my husband went to check out the Dist, it seems to me that even the African American party goers were there to have a good time. Its a place to enjoy, not to pay 20 to get in and start trouble. A dress code is always needed anywhere you go, but for some of you all to judge a dresscode such as clothing hanging off your bottom as being black, my son is white and when I take him to the Buckle, his "white boy" jeans are made that way, they are Baggy fit and they hang kind of low but lets be forreal, when is the last time you have seen someone pants hanging down which is called sagging that wasnt black, baggy fits that way and not everyone dresses in suits to hangout and drink, what type of crowd are they expecting then? White kids admire the Hip Hop culture and fashion as well, its a Billion $ industry that white america is cashing in on and its just not black consumers. So if my son goes to the Dist with a Polo shirt on that comes to his zipper he is allowed in, but when a african american gets to the gate and has on a polo the same length, its considered below the limits and not granted admission. It seems to me that they are putting more focus on African Americans wearing exactly what White kids are wearing, but criticizing it in a different way.

What they're trying to say here is that if you wear this type of clothing, you are a criminal or a threat. Are we forgetting the 50 Asian kids that brawl at Harrahs Voodoo Lounge destorying property and ruining events as often as they do? They dress the part and still cause rukus, and Commissioner Ajamu Webster started with a story of an education official who was turned away, "He came dressed in full African regalia which is a very regal and very expensive garment." Would they turn away a Japanese woman wearing a full yukata robe? I doubt it, so far, skin color has been the culprit...

This can go many different ways and some frequent bloggers here may be a bit angered that a 44 year old white lady is writing this because some people dont want to accept the reality, they would rather return a comment and say some type of black joke or how blacks do this or say that about something but now really cannot, which leaves you to either agree with reason, disgree with reason or just flat out still not care and say something to ridicule either the black race or those that have been affected because its not you and you havent been affected so it shouldnt matter because you dont believe it. You are entitled to your own opinions and what I see mostly are people on here who just like to comment with racist remarks and sound idiotic thinking they've earned cool points by stooping to ridiculous lows going out of the way to say those things, but in order for that to be said, there has to be an anger issue within that person they need to overcome. Well contrary to popular belief, something is wrong with the Dist, I'm not saying 100% the Dist is at fault because I have seen some kids with the XXXXL long T shirts and super baggy clothing, but none of them at the Dist, just guys in their mid to late 20's with nice hip hop fashion sense be turned away wearing the same thing my son is wearing. Some of you all may be tired of hearing race issues, regardless its real life!! Call it fair, call it crying wolf, but you cant call me blind to issues affecting others even if it doesnt affect me as a person. I call it awareness.

Yesterday 07/14/2008 I finally paid over $4.00 a Gallon for gas. But oil has been down since last Tuesday's slide of $5.33 which marked the biggest decline in dollar terms since the Gulf War. Even so, prices remain no lower than they were a week ago.

Now today, 07/15/2008, Oil prices plummet more than $6.00.

Is it me, or does someone owe us a little bit of change in return for paying for over priced fuel.

I bet if Oil prices rose $6.00 we'd feel the hit immediately and gas will be $4.75- $5.00 a gallon.

Wow...
