My daughter, Alexis, was rushed to the ER yesterday and over something that most of us wouldn't forsee being a huge health risk to our child(ren). I woke up today to find my daughter standing over me sucking on a tube of toothpaste (Colgate) in bubble gum flavor. I grabbed it and thought nothing of it.

About an hour later she vomitted. It came out smelling like a mixture of toothpaste and bubble gum which instantly told me that she swallowed more than I had first assumed. I called the Poison Control Center number, and told them precisely what happened and what was happening at the present time. Alexis had consumed 1/2 of a 4.6oz tube. I was told, "She has swallowed a toxic dose. You need to get her to the emergency room immediately!". I asked if I should take her myself or call an ambulance and the ladies response was, "What you should be doing is getting your car keys and getting her to the ER immediately!!!". Now, as a mother, my heart sank to my feet and I WANTED to break down and cry.

However, I maintained my cool & got the both of us ready; we were out the door in 5 minutes. At that point, I called my mom and Step-Dad who were playing golf in St. Peters and asked them to meet me at the hospital. I then called the hospital to confirm that Poison Control had called them and advised them that we were on the way; they had.

When we arrived, they ran an EKG and a blood test. Flouride can cause HEART DAMAGE. That's the "nice part" about it though. If a child who weights a mere 22lbs swallows 2.5 ounces of flouride it can and has been FATAL. Alexis weighs 27lbs and consumed 2.3 ounces. Imagine my despair if you will.

Upon arriving home hours later and getting Alexis settled down here is some information I found on a dental website. However, please keep in mind that the ER Doctor advised me that consuming too much flouride does NOT cause diarrhea NOR vomitting. A Doctor... good grief!

Surprisingly, these answers reveal the sad truth that many people do not understand about the toxicity of fluoride and when to call the Poison Control Center. It is unquestionably important for everyone to learn the signs and symptoms of fluoride toxicity, especially when there is a small child in the family.

The facts about fluoride toxicity are:

Early symptoms of acute fluoride toxicity (e.g. gastrointestinal pain, nausea, vomiting, headaches) can be produced at doses as low as 0.1 to 0.3 mg/kg.

Swallowing fluoride at the amount 5 mg/kg can be fatal.

Ingestion of as little as 1 percent of a tube of flavored children's toothpaste can produce acute fluoride toxicity in a young child.

The most common symptoms of acute fluoride toxicity include:

Nausea (97%), Vomiting (68%), Diarrhea (65%), Abdominal cramps (53%), Headaches (41%), and Burning sensations in the throat or chest (12%).

If you have small children, PLEASE put the toothpaste away. Do not assume that they will not touch it. That same tube of toothpaste had been sitting in the cabinet above my toilet for about 6 months now. ALWAYS SUPERVISE your child while they are brushing their teeth and ALWAYS use flouride free toothpaste for children 3 and under.

It truly concerns me that an EMERGENCY room DOCTOR did not know this information so I felt it imperative to pass it on to anyone and everyone on my friends list so you all will be better prepared should this happen to your child(ren).

Almost any floride will leave me with a really bad reaction.

When they put it in the water in Fenton, I lost weight, could not sleep, was a wreck.

I went to 105 pounds, people thought I had cancer.
Moved in the country, had our own well, everything was find, moved to another town, everything was find and then they put floride in their water.

What a mess, it messes up the tyroid gland.

If a dentist puts it on my teeth, I quickly get so weak, I can barely stand up, a phone feels like it weighs 50 pounds, I have to just keep rinsing my mouth, put I will still be sick for a few days.

Since I have so much trouble with floride, I think more research needs to be done.

I was told that we are the only country in the world where it is even allowed in anything.

If you will watch your newspaper, they must print the contents of the water every-so-often and that will tell you that it comes from run-off of fertilizer plants and aluminum (SP).

Los Angeles took it out of their water in 1985.
Unless they have started using it again.

Thanks for the blog. I am going to move the kids toothpaste that I have in my medicine cabinet so that my 2 1/2 yr old won't get it and eat it. I'm so sorry to hear about your little girl and hope that she is doing better. I have lost faith in some dr's b/c they tell ya one thing and you find out something else while you are researching. Thanks again for the blog it was interesting to read it.

Jennifer,

I bed your daughter won't do that again. Hopefully, she has learned from her mistake. (being 27 lbs, I assume she is a toddler.) That is why for kids under (I think 6) need no more than a pea sized amount of toothpaste and have them rince out their mouth as best as they can.

I have 5 yr old daughter and she got non-baby toothpaste when she was about 2 or 3...and I put barely any toothpaste on the toothbrush and had her rince out her mouth well. I will try to remember to read her this story when I get home from work this afternoon.

Thanks for the info. My thoughts & prayers w/ ur daughter.

Wow great blog!
Im so glad she is ok, and no bad happened!
I think I would take a trip to the Hospital and show that to the CEO and explain your experience with him, and express your concern regarding the doctor that treated your daughter. I understand your frustration and thank you so much for the information, I will pass it along to my friends.
Peace Jana

Thanks for all of the comments. However, more than anything, I'm thrilled that the word is getting out there so more parents will be educated on the potential dangers of something as simple as flouride.

I am currently awaiting a return phone call from the hospital as a result of the misinformed Doctor. I'm hoping that they will realize what a fatal mistake this could have been and do something about it.

Let's keep our fingers crossed! Thanks again...

I buy TOM'S natural toothpaste, antiplaque, tartar control plus whitening.

It does not contain floride. I get it at Wal-greens. My mom is 87 and has never used any floride and has all of her teeth, only had a wisdon tooth pulled once.

I wonder if floride is an acid. Does anyone know the ph of floride toothpaste.

My grandson gets the treatments and got a cavity on the front of his front tooth.

Flouride is poisen. It should not be in our drinking water or our toothpaste. I too suffered from health problems that I am certain was caused by flouride in drinking water and possibly my old toothpaste. I drink filtered water, toothpaste without flouride and no more health issues.

I work in a nursing home & today we were informed that the toothpaste that our resident have been using was recalled so here we are throwing their toothpaste away, how do you inform a slightly confused person why this is being done they only know you are taking something of theirs;then you have the alert residents who think they have gotten poisoned by the staff for letting them use the toothpaste, if you don't think that it was a fun day. Oh & don't forget the families who have come in to check on their family members who want to ask a million & one questions.
