EPA on HOW TO CLEAN UP A NEW LIGHTBULB.
Humans use mercury in a variety of manufacturing processes and products such as thermometers and fluorescent bulbs. If you improperly dispose of products with mercury in them, they may break and release mercury vapors which are harmful to human and ecological health.
- Dispose of used mercury-containing items properly.
- Clean up mercury spills properly and report them to the proper authorities when necessary.
Spills
What Never to Do with a Mercury Spill
-
Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean up mercury (but see the "What to Do if a Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks" section below for more specific instructions about vacuuming broken fluorescent light bulbs). The vacuum will put mercury into the air and increase exposure.
-
Never use a broom to clean up mercury. It will break the mercury into smaller droplets and spread them.
-
Never pour mercury down a drain. It may lodge in the plumbing and cause future problems during plumbing repairs. If discharged, it can cause pollution of the septic tank or sewage treatment plant.
- Never wash clothing or other items that have come in direct contact with mercury in a washing machine, because mercury may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage. Clothing that has come into direct contact with mercury should be discarded. By "direct contact," we mean that mercury was (or has been) spilled directly on the clothing. For example:
- if you broke a mercury thermometer and some of elemental mercury beads came in contact with your clothing, or
- if you broke a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) so that broken glass and other material from the bulb, including mercury-containing powder, came into contact with your clothing.
You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, like the clothing you happened to be wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.
- Never walk around if your shoes might be contaminated with mercury. Contaminated clothing can also spread mercury around.
Top of page
What to Do if a Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks
Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are lighting more homes than ever before, and EPA is encouraging Americans to use and recycle them safely. Carefully recycling CFLs prevents the release of mercury into the environment and allows for the reuse of glass, metals and other materials that make up fluorescent lights.
EPA is continually reviewing its clean-up and disposal recommendations for CFLs to ensure that the Agency presents the most up-to-date information for consumers and businesses. Maine's Department of Environmental Protection released a CFL breakage study report
on February 25, 2008. EPA has conducted an initial review of this study and, as a result of this review, we have updated the CFL cleanup instructions below.
Pending the completion of a full review of the Maine study, EPA will determine whether additional changes to the cleanup recommendations are warranted. The agency plans to conduct its own study on CFLs after thorough review of the Maine study.
Fluorescent light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal below. Please also read the
information on this page about what never to do with a mercury spill. Before Clean-up: Air Out the Room
- Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out.
- Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
- Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.
Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces
- Carefully scoop up glass pieces and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
- Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
- Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.
- Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces.
Clean-up Steps for Carpeting or Rug
- Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
- Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
- If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken.
- Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.
Clean-up Steps for Clothing, Bedding and Other Soft Materials
- If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away. Do not wash such clothing or bedding because mercury fragments in the clothing may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage.
- You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, such as the clothing you are wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.
- If shoes come into direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from the bulb, wipe them off with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels or wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for disposal.
Disposal of Clean-up Materials
- Immediately place all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area for the next normal trash pickup.
- Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials.
- Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states do not allow such trash disposal. Instead, they require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a local recycling center.
Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rug: Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming
- The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming.
- Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed.
-
Have everyone else leave the area; don't let anyone walk through the mercury on their way out. Make sure all pets are removed from the area. Open all windows and doors to the outside; shut all doors to other parts of the house.
-
DO NOT allow children to help you clean up the spill.
-
Mercury can be cleaned up easily from the following surfaces: wood, linoleum, tile and any similarly smooth surfaces.
-
If a spill occurs on carpet, curtains, upholstery or other absorbent surfaces, these contaminated items should be thrown away in accordance with the disposal means outlined below. Only cut and remove the affected portion of the contaminated carpet for disposal.
- Cleanup Instructions
-
Put on rubber, nitrile or latex gloves.
-
If there are any broken pieces of glass or sharp objects, pick them up with care. Place all broken objects on a paper towel. Fold the paper towel and place in a zip lock bag. Secure the bag and label it as directed by your local health or fire department.
-
Locate visible mercury beads. Use a squeegee or cardboard to gather mercury beads. Use slow sweeping motions to keep mercury from becoming uncontrollable. Take a flashlight, hold it at a low angle close to the floor in a darkened room and look for additional glistening beads of mercury that may be sticking to the surface or in small cracked areas of the surface. Note: Mercury can move surprising distances on hard-flat surfaces, so be sure to inspect the entire room when "searching."
-
Use the eyedropper to collect or draw up the mercury beads. Slowly and carefully squeeze mercury onto a damp paper towel. Place the paper towel in a zip lock bag and secure. Make sure to label the bag as directed by your local health or fire department.
-
After you remove larger beads, put shaving cream on top of small paint brush and gently "dot" the affected area to pick up smaller hard-to-see beads. Alternatively, use duct tape to collect smaller hard-to-see beads. Place the paint brush or duct tape in a zip lock bag and secure. Make sure to label the bag as directed by your local health or fire department.
-
OPTIONAL STEP: It is OPTIONAL to use commercially available powdered sulfur to absorb the beads that are too small to see. The sulfur does two things: (1) it makes the mercury easier to see since there may be a color change from yellow to brown and (2) it binds the mercury so that it can be easily removed and suppresses the vapor of any missing mercury. Where to get commercialized sulfur? It may be supplied as mercury vapor absorbent in mercury spill kits, which can be purchased from laboratory, chemical supply and hazardous materials response supply manufacturers. Note: Powdered sulfur may stain fabrics a dark color. When using powdered sulfur, do not breathe in the powder as it can be moderately toxic. Additionally, users should read and understand product information before use.
-
If you choose not to use this option, you may want to request the services of a contractor who has monitoring equipment to screen for mercury vapors. Consult your local environmental or health agency to inquire about contractors in your area. Place all materials used with the cleanup, including gloves, in a trash bag. Place all mercury beads and objects into the trash bag. Secure trash bag and label it as directed by your local health or fire department.
-
Contact your local health department, municipal waste authority or your local fire department for proper disposal in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
-
Remember to keep the area well ventilated to the outside (i.e., windows open and fans in exterior windows running) for at least 24 hours after your successful cleanup. Continue to keep pets and children out of cleanup area. If sickness occurs, seek medical attention immediately. View information on health effects related to exposures to vapors from metallic mercury. For additional information on health effects, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) provides a Mercury Fact Sheet
that also presents information on health effects related to exposures to vapors from metallic mercury.
Recommendation: If there are young children or pregnant women in the house, seek additional advice from your local or state health or state environmental agency.

Spills of More than the Amount in a Thermometer, but Less Than or Similar to Two Tablespoons (One Pound) Cleanup Instructions
1. Have everyone else leave the area; don't let anyone walk through the mercury on their way out.
2. Open all windows and doors to the outside.
3. Turn down the temperature.
4. Shut all doors to other parts of the house, and leave the area.
Don't vacuum.
5. Call your local or state health or environmental agency.

Spills of More than Two Tablespoons (One Pound)
Any time one pound or more of mercury is released to the environment, it is mandatory to call the National Response Center (NRC). The NRC hotline operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call (800) 424-8802. Note that because mercury is heavy, only two tablespoons of mercury weigh about one pound.

We all know about the KISS method for getting things done. But I can't say I've been more inclined to integrate that into my lifestyle than now, as a mom. All you want is quick and easy! I'm also more cognizant of how we treat Mother Earth. Not only is it important for us to treat her kindly, but in doing so, we are teaching our children how to do the same, thus giving them an more healthy envorinment to thrive. The world we leave behind will be theirs. How will they treat it? What are you doing in your home to teach your little ones (or your spouse) to be "greener". One resource is www.springfieldmoms.org with a list of ways to be green. What resources have you found to help?

I have to admit that the pain at the gas pump is having one good effect on people....we're all thinking "greener." Many people are trying to find ways to not only save money, but also help the environment at the same time. I've started not accepting plastic bags at stores. It's a hard habit to get into, but it sure can make a difference. One plastic bag takes 200 years to degrade in a landfill! That's a lot of plastic bags for a lot of years! I also try to re-use plastic bags as much as I can. But it doesn't stop there....whether you're using organic products, taking the bus, or just turning off your air conditioning, it's all saving money and energy, and letting Mother Earth breathe! I'd love to get a hybrid car, however right now there is a waiting list a mile long for one. Still $70 to fill up my tank is getting a little old. So how are you helping make things greener?

There have been many anti-Obama comments on the web. I find it interesting that so many of them comment on the personal and not on the policies or practices of the Senator. This weekend I think truly showed the character of the two men who would be president.
When tens of thousands of Americans were being displaced by flood waters, our President continued his "farewell tour of Europe". Senator John McCain however cancelled his Texas fundraiser for Monday night. Of course, the reason was because the press was asking him about why he was willing to associate with Clayton Williams, who in a 1990 guberatorial race joked that the similarity between the weather & rape was that "if it's inevitable, just enjoy it" We're talking about a real humanitarian here! In Sen. McCain's defense, he did cancel the event once it was brought to his attention by the media. (Of course, you wonder why no one thought to google this guy before they agreed to a fundraiser.) (You also have to wonder about McCain keeping the money...you know the uproar that would happen if Obama tried to keep money from a source like this.)
How did Senator Obama spend the weekend? He also cancelled a fundraising event. His was in Iowa & he was unwilling to pull police officers from flood relief efforts for his protective detail. He did however show up in Southern Illinois to fill a few sandbags & do interviews with local stations to bring attention to where sandbagging efforts were taking place. A photo op? Sure, but it was also used to bring in more local volunteers for the sandbagging efforts & as the Senator represents Illinois, it does seem to be appropriate that he was there.
It should also be noted that for the past week, the home page of Obama's website has shown a link to the American Red Cross for flood relief donations. (This is not typical behavior of a candidate raising money for a general election) He has also sent e-mails to his extensive e-mail list requesting donations to the Red Cross & listing sandbagging sites for those close to the flooding.
I hope the next time you read an e-mail telling you Obama is unpatriotic because he doesn't wear a flag pin or he's a secret muslim or a radical christian or the anti-christ or any other silly rumor; you stop to think. Maybe all that fine rhetoric is for real. Maybe he really does care about America. Maybe the reason so much time is spent attacking him personally with lies is because that's the only defense the Republicans have got this year

HEAR YE, HEAR YE.......
Congress has gone retarded. Once elected, they lose their X-ray vision capabilities that allowed them to see through the Congressional buildings to what is happening outside in the real world. (Has those damn Chinese contractors that are working on refurbishing the buildings for Congress putting lead back in?) Then it seems that when their jobs are over for the day and they retire for the evening to their lavish homes or hotels and its parties, hookers, liquor, drugs or under the table handshake exchanges, they put the blinders over their eyes so they cannot see left or right.
What happened to the good old days when you can take a crooked Senator outside and challenge them to a duel at 50 paces....(well, you've have to insure the guns weren't made in China or they'd misfire back against you)
What happened to the days when Big Brother had more important issues to deal with that telling the citizens that they had to change their freakin light bulbs? Would the weather related floodings in Iowa or Minnesota mean anything?
What about the tornado's throughout the Midwest?
The killer heat in the east?
The loss of homes and lives in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana due to Katrina means anything?
What about the depressed Housing markets and homes lost to their Foreclosures? Unscrupulous Adjustable Rate Mortgages?
Perhaps excessively high unemployment and loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs overseas to third world countries? Isn't our homeland security being scrutinized when we provide private information concerning our water, telephone, 911 and cabling information important anymore?
Don't get us started on illegal immigrants from Mexico, who are sucking up the countries surplus with their illegal entrance into this country. How may illegal immigrants from Mexico are now sitting our jails and prisons for murder, rape and drugs?
Taxes, taxes, we don't need any MORE STINKING TAXES.....
Does gas shortages not mean anything to Congress? Oh wait, many of them are chauffeured around. Do they pay for the gas in that Limo? Oh that right, they aren't allowed to pay for gas as they need to conserve their monies for those $1000.00 plate dinners so be in the same room as GWB or Vincente Fox or Ghandi or Arafat or Mickey Mouse. Besides, their votes towards energy is so well fixed from the Oil Lobbyists, that they can afford alot of $1000.00 a plate dinners when they perform their under the table handshakes.
Animals coming across borders with Hoof and Mouth diseases, or CWL isn't worth worrying about. Vegetable infestations such as the tomatoes are nothing to even discuss right now. What next? Bananas from Cuba having worms? Oranges from Africa with worms in them? Could it be that grapes from Ecuador causes Ecoli? Ahhh, pshaw, not really. Right?
But an active WAR in IRAQ. Surely they must have a bit more priority than a CFL made only in China? CHINA? The country that has given us tainted cat and dog food? Lead filled children’s toys? Fireworks with lead? Computers lined with lead? Are we sure that we're not lead lined due to the interaction of Chinese?
When is the govt. going to stop controlling the rules that we live by? If we want to have a regular light bulb, then why don't we have that right? To save energy? Let's see here...how many Senators or Representatives flew over to Iraq to visit them home town soldiers or to see for themselves just how the war was going? Did that limo that took them to the airport use any gas or oil? Did that bartender properly pour enough scotch or brandy into their drinks before take off? Did that plane use any fuel flying overseas to IRAQ? Was there any gas or oil used in the extra Humvee's when they picked up these legislators to review the troops?
How about their flights home? Use any gas or oil? hmmmm. What about all the lights on in Congress? Why don't we think more about capping the "FRICKING HOT AIR" that exists in Congress for energy savings?
Congressman Poe is correct. One bulb broken, and your life is over as you know it. They stopped mercury in thermometers years ago due to the hazard to US Citizens They stopped paint from having lead or mercury additives due to the hazard to US Citizens. They halted fish consumption due to the hazard to US Citizens due to mercury content.
NOW THEY WANT US TO BUY LIGHT BULBS FROM CHINA THAT ARE MERCURY FILLED? WHAT NEXT? MAKE US CHANGE OUR DEPENDS BECAUSE THEY MAY CONTAIN POOP?

Are you one of those people who just can't wait to get to your workout? Or are you one of those folks who dreads, loathes, despises and simply hates working out? Well if you fall into the latter category, don't feel alone. There are others just like you who feel this way. But these feelings can be changed with a basic action plan to counteract the causes of exercise aversion! There are many reasons why people don't stick with their well intentioned fitness plans, but there are three "big" barriers that seem to affect all exercisers at some point.
BIG BARRIER #1 = BOREDOM
The same old workout can lead to boredom very quickly unless the activity is something you truly enjoy. Stomping on a treadmill everyday for 20 minutes while watching the world state of affairs can become monotonous quickly as well as depressing! You may have had great fitness intentions when the new year rolled around but the excitement has worn off, the honeymoon is over, and you are still doing the same workout you started with. Now you aren't sure how to change it. What to do?
BIG BARRIER #2 = NO RESULTS
When you start a fitness or eating plan you may see results right away. The pounds start coming off and you feel like you could do one of those TV testimonials. But soon those results slow down, taper off or just come to a complete stop. It is proven that diets alone will not produce lasting weight loss. We all know that we have to move more and eat less but even that plan has to change over the course of your fitness program. Not seeing the results you want is a big factor in continuing your fitness quest. Research has shown that our bodies are great at adapting to exercise very quickly. So if you aren't changing your workout regularly, you won't see the results you are looking for. How to change it up?
BIG BARRIER #3 = TIME ISSUES
Everyone is busy - so why are some able to get their workouts in and others aren't? Two factors are making time and making a committment. You have to schedule time for your workout just like any other appointment. It has to become part of your daily life and part of your committment to improving or maintaining your health and fitness. It has to go in the category of daily living just like brushing your teeth or breathing!. The "I don't have time to exercise" excuse just doesn't cut it anymore. You don't have to hit the gym for two hours each day. Those days have long been over and there are so many options now available to fit any time hampered life. How to make time?
There is one answer to all three of these barriers and it's not exactly "new". This miracle of fitness has been around for a long time and it gets "new and improved" all the time. You just have to be fearless, jump in, and do it. GROUP EXERCISE If you haven't thought of group exercise before - now is the time. Well, the Oscar nominees have been announced.....
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,324548,00.html
Can't say I've seen a lot of these movies (perhaps because I'm pregnant and sitting in a movie theatre isn't appealing right now).... but it'll give me a chance to watch something good on DVD or PPV. Still, no matter how familiar I am with the movies, just watching the Academy Awards show on TV is always enterntaining with all of it's Hollywood regalness. However this year, things could be alot different with the writer's strike. Some actors say they're not crossing a picket line, which surely will be a large part of the Oscar scenery. Perhaps it will get more people to watch the Oscars this year? What's your take?

How safe do you feel now, after a Tiger killed a teen and injured two others at a San Francisco Zoo? Apparently the wall the Tiger was kept behind wasn't high enough.
