For Restaurants, I think it should absolutely be up to the business owner whether or not they allow smoking. Perhaps businesses that already have more than one floor/room could have an area of each, where the Nons would not even have to pass through the Smk sections. That would be fair.

Casinos and Bars on the other hand, almost always lose business when they go non smoking. What they don't seem to realize, is that smoking is an addictive behavior, just as drinking and gambling are. When you do one on a regular basis, you usually do the other as well. If there is no comfortable place to smoke when you drink, you more than likely will go someplace where you don't have to stop in the middle of your evening, to trot outside to enjoy a cigarette. While it's true that you may not lose business at first, non smokers most of the time, will only patronize your business once in a while, while smokers will come back again and again.

I, personally, get just as sick from heavy perfume, strong beer breath, and people blowing their noses right next to me, (which to me, is a million times worse than someone smoking in the same room) as I would from someone smoking in a restaurant. So, at this point, I guess it's just a matter of what bothers you the most.

This country seems to be losing more and more freedoms every day. Next, you won't be able to publicly eat a hamburger, because the PETA people will be mad, and for the same reason, Dry Cleaners may stop taking your Leathers and Furs so as not to offend. Where will it end?

I agree but in places where the preparation and/or serving of food is involved, the issue of smoking needs to be addressed-Not by the government but by the business owners-If they really care about their customers' concerns, they would make the effort to offer a comfortable area for either the smokers or non-smokers. Many places are too small for this change to be made but at least the non-smokers would have more alternatives down the street than just sitting there and smelling the odor on smoker's clothing-Or seeing nasty ashtrays near food. I have always said that cigarettes & ashtrays should never be near where I eat or cook; Just as the medical places have banned it not only from their buildings but the entire property-It just dosen't need to be near food or medical services areas. Good post as always, mrshubbyd!

By the way-I see in your pix that you were fortuante to be on "The Price Is Right"! Wow, what an experience that must have been! I have watched Bob Barker since his days at "Truth Or Consequences" and I feel honored to have chatted with someone that was actually on his show. I'll bet it was exciting-How did you do that day? Give me all the awesome details, PLEASE!

Thank you Car. I definitely agree with no ashtrays and such where the food is prepared and/or eaten, as well as banning them from medical areas and such . I guess it just makes me mad that the Government always thinks that they need to "step-in" all the time to "correct" what they think our behavior should be.

If businesses want to ban smoking, that's fine. I just think that it should be their call. Our world is never going to be all things for all people, and as soon as the Gov't recognizes that, the more we can go back to being a free country. Right now, it seems like we are heading away from democracy, and more into a dictatorship.

This is the way I feel exactly Car.

A example: Here in NW Oakland county, we had a business owner who read in a letter to the editor about a popular local restaurant that allowed smoking. The letter also stated that this restaurant shared a building with another business. And the smoking was affecting the other business. He felt that the letter was directed towards his restaurant. He then went to non-smoking. That is the way it should be.

IMO, these same people that think its the government's job to do this, will be the same one's crying the loudest when they really start taking away freedoms.

(disclaimer: If this is filled with typos and errors, oh well)

Happy Sunday, LeMay.

As for TPIR, I had a blast! And yes, I won EVERYTHING!! A trip to Brazil, A 4 person sauna, Excercise equipment, an electronic keyboard, and a 22 ft camper trailer! It had been a dream of mine to be on there for SO long, and I'm glad I was able to get on there while Bob was still the host! I couldn't believe it when I heard my name, It was fabulous! Then to win my game, AND the Showcase...WOW!!! The best time ever!

Thanks for asking my friend!

LeMay, don't you even worry about typos my friend! We are all human, and what's important is, that we are able to express ourselves without having to worry about whether or not someone is picking apart our grammar/punctuation/spelling errors, etc..., and whatever else people seem to hone in on when they have nothing better to do!

The only way I will even mention something like that, is if I just can't understand the post in any way, shape, or form, lol! (or if someone is being unesscessarily mean to another poster for no reason.

Take care!

You have blown me away, mrshubbyd! Congratulations! I just told Regina & her dad Stanley about it-They are also faithful watchers of TPIR. I try to block Drew Carey out & enjoy the show & contestants-You & your family are truly blessed. Wow, what a story! And that's the problem with government trying to pass illiterate bills like the smoking ban when people are starving, suffering, or in need of genuine leadership & decisions. Have a nice evening!

Thank you so much! The behind-the-scenes stuff was interesting too! We actually were going to L.A. for my husband's brother's wedding. As soon as I knew we were, I sent away for tickets. I sent for all of the days that we were going to be there, that they taped, since with all of the wedding festivities, I didn't know which day we would be free.

The 1st time, we tried to go, was on a Monday, and for some reason, they cancelled taping that day ( technical problems or something). We went again the next morning, leaving the hotel at 6 am thinking that would be plenty of time, Well, by the time we got there, (9:30am) we wre already too late to try and get in. (the tickets don't guarantee you admission, they just enable you to get a number for POSSIBLE admission). So that night, I told my hubby that we were just going to go back to the hotel, eat dinner, and come back that night, and that's what we did.

We got there about 3 am, and just waited in line with everyone else. We were numbers 37 & 38 in line. At 6 am, you turn in your ticket for a number, and at 8 am, another, at 10 am another, and then you start actually lining up to give your information, and for them to interview you, and get your actual name tag. (if you make it that far). Once you get your name tag, you have a good chance of getting all the way in, but they tell you all through the morning, that you're not "in" until you're IN! The reason being, is that groups of 20 or more, are guaranteed admission, and as they show up, people in line can get pushed back in line to where they don't make it.

After that, you start moving along the line in groups of 8-10 to the interview area. (kind of like the line at an amusement park (stop, start, wait). The last area just before the waiting area to go in, they interview you. It's really fast, and that's how they decide who they call to "Come on Down!". I was just lucky enough to get called! Some people in line said they had been there many, many times, and still have never been called.

Also, you can only be called ONCE in your life. Even if you don't get up on stage, you can never have your name called again. You can GO to SEE the show, but you just can't have your name called again. Anyway, that's about it, and if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them! Just let me know!

Take care Buddy!

Smoking is very harmful, but so are the banned drugs, alcohol is a killer. We all know the dangers. It's not a government issue. It's legal to buy cigarettes and alcohol in this country, how can it be illegal to smoke or drink?

Why is it that it's illegal to grow your own smoke, or make your own brew, but it's legal to buy them and pay a tax on them? hummmmmmm

I understand that smoking is an addiction and a legal choice. HOWEVER, it also causes cancer among users and bystanders. So, why should others be put at risk because smokers want their "freedoms"? You wouldn't allow someone to blow radiation at you. They are both legal carcinogens. It is going to take one former restaurant employee with cancer to hire a good lawyer & sue a corporate restaurant for all of them to learn that it is just not practical to allow someone with an addiction to drag the rest of us down with them. If all restaurants and bars went no smoking-there would be no choice but to stop, just like the 30 other states that have done so.

I understand you position, and respect it. However, non smokers don't necessarily HAVE to be put at risk. They too, can choose not to go to places where smoking is allowed. I just think that it should not be the Government's choice to decide for us.

At this point, they have already changed the grease that our food is fried in, in restaurants. In some areas people throw paint at you because you wear fur. People against abortion decide it's ok to kill other people for performing a legal procedure. And even our choice of foods in some restaurants, has been changed FOR us because some whiner has nothing else to do with their time. (this is not a remark directed toward you)

Why are there not more people concerned about the homeless, hungry, and uninsured? It's because if they were really concerned about the welfare of others, they would have to DO something about it, and not just SAY something about it. Smokers just seem to be an easier target.

Just ask the businesses in Canada if the smoking ban was best. A lot of them could go out of business since smoking was banned there.

What if after all this so called "research", it was found that people really WEREN'T harmed by second hand smoke? It's just like the cell phone "research". First it was harmful, then it wasn't, then it was, then it wasn't. Same thing with wine. Pregnant women shouldn't drink it, then it was that it was good for you. When will we know what the truth is?

P.S. Why don't we just have the NON smokers go outside? Then, they can have all the fresh air they want!

...Or would that mean that we were trampling on their "freedoms"?

One more thing...

So many are making this solely about smoking. The bigger issue is the Government trying to run our private lives, and make our choices FOR us. Do we really want that, considering the state of this Country? If they can't manage to feed and insure their own people, they really don't need to make other choice for us either. That's like letting an Addicted Gambler manage your finances.

Just my opinion.

hitler did the same thing to his ppl. when are the ppl in this country going to wake up and realize each day we are becoming less and less free. we have choice now but what about the next ten yrs. we are still the greatest country lets keep it that way and protect all rights

So true sjones. But some people are unable to see that this is the route we're being driven to. And they won't realize it until it's too late.

mrshubbyd,
You seem to be forgeting about the people who work in those in those smoke filled bars and casinos, they are forced to breathe cancer causing smoke, do you think that is OK? I sure don't. I do agree with you on the Gov taking our freedom, but how else do you regulate someone who wants not only to destroy their health but yours also?

Drinking to excess in a bar/restruant, only hurts the person drinking. Smoking in a bar/resturant hurts everyone who comes in contact with the smoke.

Having a "NO SMOKING AREA" in a restaruant is like having a "NO PEEING AREA" in a swiming pool. I prefer not to be in eaither.
