There have been many anti-Obama comments on the web.   I find it interesting that so many of them comment on the personal and not on the policies or practices of the Senator.    This weekend I think truly showed the character of the two men who would be president.

When tens of thousands of Americans were being displaced by flood waters, our President continued his "farewell tour of Europe".    Senator John McCain however cancelled his Texas fundraiser for Monday night.    Of course, the  reason was because the press was asking him about why he was willing to associate with Clayton Williams, who in a 1990 guberatorial race joked that the similarity between the weather & rape was that "if it's inevitable, just enjoy it"    We're talking about a real humanitarian here!  In Sen. McCain's defense, he did cancel the event once it was brought to his attention by the media.  (Of course, you wonder why no one thought to google this guy before they agreed to a fundraiser.)  (You also have to wonder about McCain keeping the money...you know the uproar that would happen if Obama tried to keep money from a source like this.)

How did Senator Obama spend the weekend?    He also cancelled a fundraising event.   His was in Iowa & he was unwilling to pull police officers from flood relief efforts for his protective detail.   He did however show up in Southern Illinois to fill a few sandbags & do interviews with local stations to bring attention to where sandbagging efforts were taking place.    A photo op?  Sure, but it was also used to bring in more local volunteers for the sandbagging efforts & as the Senator represents Illinois, it does seem to be appropriate that he was there.

It should also be noted that for the past week, the home page of Obama's website has shown a link to the American Red Cross for flood relief donations.  (This is not typical behavior of a candidate raising money for a general election)   He has also sent e-mails to his extensive e-mail list requesting donations to the Red Cross & listing sandbagging sites for those close to the flooding.

I hope the next time you read an e-mail telling you Obama is unpatriotic because he doesn't wear a flag pin or he's a secret muslim or a radical christian or the anti-christ  or any other silly rumor; you stop to think.    Maybe all that fine rhetoric is for real.   Maybe he really does care about America.    Maybe the reason so much time is spent attacking him personally with lies is because that's the only defense the Republicans have got this year

Obama is doing what he thinks will get him elected, not because he is such a good person.

The illinois senator has done anything to help the people, look at his track record. He's getting paid by the tax payers for doing nothing.

Obama is nothing but a racist hate mongrel!!!

OK, what am I missing here? We have one Senator who continues to campaign & raise money while wishing those of us in the Midwest his "thoughts & prayers".

We have one candidate who is asking his supporters to contribute money and time.

Which do we want as President if another Katrina should happen?

By the way, ever wonder why all you hear against Obama is name calling? I especially am impressed that you managed to call him a racist while at the same time refering to his mixed parentage as a "mongrel"! Truly impressive! I sure an argument like that will make me want to vote for McCain!

I live in Illinois and I will be glad when you pay taxes just like we have to do. I go to Missouri to get my gas - it is 20 cents a gallon cheaper there. But you do not want to hear that - you just want to hear how Great Obama is - well he has never found out yet that south of Chicago is still Illinois - when we had all the storm damage - the Missouri congressmen help us here in the Metro Area - when we call and told BO the Metro Area had problems - we were told that is Missouri not Illinois - so all I can say is if BO gets in office - then it will be welcome to my world of taxes and more taxes. You had better hope he will learn how to vote on ISSUES as of today he does not have a good voting record. Only "Present"
How can you blame Bush for Katrina - it was the mayor and the senator there that turned DOWN THE GOVERNMENTS HELP AND WHEN THEY GOT IN TROUBLE - THEN IT WAS BUSH'S FAULT. Get real - this is like a kindergartner saying "he did it" when the whole world watched the mayor let the school busses flood empty, they also had offers from the train station to take a group and again the mayor said NO. As far as they people being given a place to say and money to function on - the money was spent in a casino - what was this some kind of therapy??? BLAME THE RIGHT ONES - THE MAYOR AND SENATOR FROM THERE.

nemoc - Oh, so Katrina/New Orleans was the Federal government's fault eh?

There is a protocol for obtaining federal aid and assistance. Before the FEMA and other personnel can enter an area they have to be ASKED by the Governor of that state. It was a full 3 days that transpired between the hurricane and when the Governor asked for help.

I'm sorry, but some guy showing up in a white shirt with rolled up sleeves to ceremoniously shovel a few bags full of sand smacks more of symbolism than it does to providing help.

Symoblism? Yes it is. It also helped drive news coverage of the problem & focused attention on it quicker. But you are right, it is mainly symbolic. (Probably looks a little better than flying over the problem in an aircraft, but that's a different argument for another time.)

I also mentioned that he had used his extensive e-mail list to solict donations to the Red Cross & to ask for volunteers to sandbag. This is not an action that takes much time or effort, but it does produce a result.

My question is, has anyone received an e-mail from the McCain campaign asking you to contribute to the Red Cross or anyone else involved in flood relief? IF not, then why not? It doesn't take much effort or time.
